Riding hat specialist Charles Owen & Co is to sponsor
the Horse Demonstration & Seminar Arena at BETA International 2013, where it will introduce The Charles Owen Learning
Centre to showcase live-action product displays and retailer information sessions.
Charles Owen will present an essential and interactive guide to hat manufacture,
testing and fitting, with the help of Charles Owen sponsored riders and Q&As with members of the audience.
BETA International is the world’s leading trade fair for the equestrian,
country clothing and pet products markets. It will be held at the NEC, Birmingham, from 17 to 19 February. Entry is open
to the trade only and free on pre-registration at www.beta-int.com.
Last year, BETA International visitors were
teated to a performance from Topthorn, a life-size black stallion puppet from the West End hit production War Horse. The
following video Riding Safely captures their performance which demonstrates how the puppeteers breathe life and a sense of
reality into the stallion puppet.

in store for visitors to the BETA International 2012 trade fair. BETA International is the world’s leading trade fair

UK London: Free Health & Safety and Legal Advice Seminar - 28

HOOF, the British Equestrian Federation’s
Olympic Legacy Project is supporting a free Health and Safety and Employment Law seminar for the London Horse Network.
The London Horse Network which consists of
riding school managers, livery yard owners and freelance and retained instructors and grooms will benefit from the workshop
being held at the Hilton Olympia Hotel on Monday 28th February.
“These subjects may seem rather dry
on paper but have sparked some serious debate during previous London Horse Network meetings”, explained Volunteer Chair
of the London Horse Network, Jodie Maile, adding, “We are very grateful to HOOF Ride London for offering to support
a day where the Network can learn from the experts.”
The British Grooms Association, recently
appointed as a member body of the BEF, will be introducing its role within the industry and presenting the ‘Equine Employer’s
Handbook’, produced by the BGA to the audience.
Regarded as a ‘must have’ for
all equestrian establishments, 30 copies of the £39.95 Equine Employer’s Handbook are generously being donated to the
Network by HOOF Ride London.
Career Grooms, sponsors of the BGA will also
conduct a workshop to aid understanding of the problems and solutions when recruiting, training and retaining staff, and Nicole
Seaman LLP, an Employment Law solicitor from Warner Goodman will be on hand to answer any specific questions from the London
Horse Network.
London Representative of the BEF, David Gadsby
said, “Between HOOF and the London Horse Network, we have a comprehensive line up of professionals that will aim to
introduce their expertise, answer specific questions on the day and indicate various channels through which Network members
can access continued support.”
The day will also include a workshop with
Ray Hipkin CMIOSH, MEWI.
Health and Safety Officer for British Eventing,
Ray manages safety issues at Blenheim, Bramham and Weston Park International Horse Trials, he is also Chairman of the National
Farm Attractions Network and an independent advisor on Health and Safety Issues to a wide range of commercial clients.
Jodie concludes, “It’ll be great
to have an industry expert on hand who understands the challenges faced in equestrianism especially the demands placed on
centres and instructors when dealing with young, old, nervous and otherwise vulnerable, disadvantaged or disabled people in
a high risk environment.”

Dorset – UK:
Free health and safety training workshop for equestrian businesses

Local Councils in Dorset are working in partnership with the Health & Safety
Executive (HSE) and Kingston Maurward College to bring those in the equestrian industry a free health and safety training
workshop.
The workshop will take place at Kingston Maurward College, Dorchester (DT2 8PX)
from 10.30 – 3.45 on Thursday 12 November 2009.
Topics during the day will include how to comply with legislation and the supporting
role of the HSE and Local Authorities. At a practical level there will be a focus on manual handling, ATV (quad bike) and
machinery safety, human and equine personal protective equipment, supported by ridden demonstrations from the equestrian department
at the College.
Those attending will have the opportunity to ask questions in a friendly and relaxed
environment.

BHS Safety Conference - 3 October 2009
The British Horse Society will be hosting its biennial Safety Conference on Saturday
3 October at Highgate House, Creaton, Northamptonshire, NN6 8NN, and if you are a British Horse Society member, entry will
be free.
The conference is due to run from 10:00 am to 4.00 pm, with lunch and refreshments
provided.
This year will see a great line up of speakers, including Mr Roy Burek, Managing
Director of Charles Owen & Co Ltd, and Professor Michael Gilchrist BE, MEngSc, PhD, DEng from University College Dublin,
who will address current research into development of riding hats; Air Ambulance Paramedic Mr Anthony Bleetman FRCS; Police Captain Andy Mortimer from North Midlands Helicopter Support Unit; Wing Commander
Jon Taylor, Director of Air Staff at the Ministry of Defence who will all address issues surrounding helicopters and Riding Safely journalist Mr Ken Law will be speaking on equestrian accidents statistics.

British Eventing Safety Forums - July 2009
British Eventing (BE) is leading the way on safety with four regional safety forums
to be held during July to update members on what the organisation is doing and to invite input and suggestions on further
initiatives for consideration.
BE Safety Committee Chairman Iain Graham, National Safety Officer Jonathan Clissold,
and Safety Committee member and Course Designer and builder Adrian Ditcham, will be on hand to discuss the latest safety research
news and developments. Following the presentation there will be an open forum for input and questions from the floor.
Speaking to Horse & Hound Mr Clissold said "We want to tell people about the
history related to the safety of the sport and what we're doing to improve safety in the future."
Topics will include how BE collects data, how to complete a safety audit, updates
on the second-generation (frangible) pin and the safety and research fence sponsored by Goodyear.
BE spokesman Liza Randall said: "BE has done so much research over the past six
years that we thought it was time to share [our work]. We hope as many people as possible come along and throw ideas round
so we can progress even further."
BE is also producing a safety manifesto Changing Tracks, to be released later this
year.
All four safety forums will be held during the evening from 7 - 9 at the following
